UNI at $7.15, would you still hold it?
CME launched UNI futures, hailed as the "first coin in DeFi history," with fee switch burning $92 million annualized, positive news one after another—but the price dropped from 10.9 to 7.15, evaporating 30% in a month. Is this a golden opportunity before institutional entry, or a cut for retail investors after narrative fulfillment?
Let's look at the surface first: continuous good news, but price doesn't rise.
On October 19, CME officially launched UNI futures, making UNI the first DeFi token to enter CME. Compound deployed on Unichain, supporting UNI as collateral. Fee switch activated, protocol fees buy back and burn UNI, with about $92 million annualized burn in the past 30 days. September protocol revenue hit a record $14.8 million, with Robinhood Chain contributing about 53%.
Sounds like it's about to take off?
The result? UNI fell from 10.9 at the end of September to 7.15 now, a drop of over 30%. The price is below the 7-day, 20-day, and 50-day SMAs, daily chart is bearish, exchange inflows are high, analysts directly say it's the "distribution phase."
What does "good news fully priced in" mean? This is it.
First: CME launch is a milestone, but institutions haven't entered yet
CME launched UNI futures, standard contract 10,000 UNI, micro 1,000 UNI, the first DeFi token on CME. Long term, this is a sign of institutionalization—hedging tools are available, compliant exposure is available.
But the good news came on October 19, UNI dropped from 10.9 to 7.15 in less than a month. Hedging tools arrived, but institutions haven't bought yet. Contract launch doesn't equal capital inflow, it just handed a knife to the shorts.
In plain terms: CME gave you a compliant tool to short UNI; shorting at 7.15 is the same logic as shorting BTC after Bitcoin futures launched in December 2021.
Institutional tools ready doesn't mean institutions buy immediately. Sometimes, they short first.
Second: fee switch is a long-term narrative, but can't save price short-term
Fee switch turns UNI from a pure governance token into a "cash flow deflationary asset"—protocol fees buy back and burn UNI. About $92 million annualized burn in the past 30 days.
Sounds sexy?
But have you calculated: UNI circulating supply is 625 million, total 1 billion. Burn amount relative to market cap is negligible. Based on recent burn, P/S is about 50x, other DEXs are 20-30x. The market gives a premium, but premium needs growth to digest.
More painful: burn depends on trading volume. Robinhood Chain's heat cools down, trading volume falls, burn decreases. Tokenized stock narrative is strong, but short-term fulfillment is below expectations.
Deflation narrative is slow-cooked soup, not stir-fried kidney. Can you wait?
Third: technicals tell you 7.15 is not the bottom
Daily chart is in a downtrend. 7.05-7.10 is a recent low concentration area, strong support at 6.91-6.80. RSI neutral to weak at 40-45, MACD short-term bearish, volume expands on decline.
Resistance above: 7.26-7.40 (7-day SMA/daily pivot), 7.50-7.61, 7.8-8.0. Price below all short-term moving averages, short-term bearish.
Weekly chart still in an uptrend channel since June low, 200-day MA provides support below—so this is a deep pullback in an uptrend, not a trend reversal.
But how deep can the pullback go?
Break below 6.91, look at 6.7-6.6. If broken again, June lows await.
Bull vs. bear, you decide
On one side:
CME launch, first DeFi token institutional milestone
Fee switch activated, $92 million annualized burn
September protocol revenue record $14.8 million
v4 Hooks support compliant permission pools, RWA narrative opens
Weekly chart still in uptrend channel, 200-day MA support
On the other side:
Dropped from 10.9 to 7.15, over 30% retracement
High exchange inflows, distribution phase
Price below all short-term MAs, daily bearish
Robinhood Chain heat cools, volume falls
Macro inflation hot, rate hike expectations suppress altcoins
Key levels
Resistance above: 7.26-7.40 → 7.50-7.61 → 7.8-8.0
Support below: 7.05-7.10 → 6.91-6.80 → 6.6-6.7
Trading strategy
Short-term traders:
Don't chase longs at current price. Scale in light longs at 7.05-6.95, stop loss below 6.85, target half out at 7.40, then watch 7.60. Confirmation: daily close above 7.26-7.40 + volume expansion. No confirmation, no action.
If rebound near 7.40 is weak, light short positions with stop loss above 7.55, target 6.95-6.90. Position size 1-2% of total capital.
Mid-term players:
If it drops to 6.80-7.00 range and macro doesn't worsen, scale in longs, stop loss 6.60-6.70, target 8.5-9.5. Core logic is burn mechanism + CME institutionalization + tokenized asset narrative fulfillment. Not betting on short-term news, but mid-term structure.
Long-term believers:
UNI is DeFi leader, fee switch gives it cash flow. If you believe DEX will always be crypto infrastructure, dollar-cost average below 7. But don't expect it to double in a month—it's a slow bull, not a mad dog.
UNI now is like MKR in 2023—
Everyone said "DeFi is dead" "governance tokens are worthless," but once fee switch opened, MKR went from 500 to 2000. UNI's fee switch is already on, burn is running, CME is launched, institutional path is clear.
When good news is fully priced in, price often falls further. The real bottom is when no one talks about it.
