Samsung's Q3 operating profit is expected to increase nearly 8 times (107.4 trillion KRW, +782.5% YoY). The core driver is not a recovery in consumer electronics but an AI storage super cycle that has propelled the semiconductor division alone into a profit explosion zone: HBM, server DRAM, and NAND supply-demand mismatches have driven prices and shipments up simultaneously, with the chip segment almost entirely accounting for the company's incremental growth.
However, the structure is quite "unbalanced": mobile phones and home appliances are hit by the negative impact of rising storage prices and increasing component costs, resulting in flat or pressured profits; the real money comes from data centers and AI servers. Although Q3 revenue of 195 trillion KRW hit a record high, it was slightly below market expectations, and the quarter-on-quarter profit growth has slowed compared to Q2, indicating that the elasticity of "low base + price hikes" is weakening at the margin.
The market reaction is lukewarm because the positive news has already been priced in. Investors are more concerned about three things: whether HBM4 volume growth can withstand competition from SK Hynix, whether AI capital expenditure will decline, and when the storage price hike cycle will peak. The full earnings report on October 29 will focus on semiconductor division profit margins, HBM share, long-term contract locked volumes, and whether mobile phones/foundry continue to drag.
This preview proves that "the shovel sellers" have made a fortune, but it is not a full revival for Samsung; the subsequent focus shifts from "whether prices will rise" to "how long the cycle can last and whether Samsung can solidify its HBM market share."
