The recent Coldcard situation is unfortunate, and it's a reminder that security is never as simple as slogans.
"Trust, but verify" is a great principle in theory. In practice, most people rely on layers of complex hardware, firmware, wallets, and software. Very few users have the expertise—or the time—to audit every line of code they depend on.
Personally, I wasn't affected. I use a Trezor with a high-entropy passphrase. But my thinking around custody has changed over time.
A few months ago, I was using a multisig setup through a service provider. I eventually moved away from it—not because multisig is bad, but because the operational complexity kept growing. Every additional layer introduced more software, more procedures, and more potential points of failure.
After surviving a serious car accident earlier this year, I started thinking less about maximizing security at all costs and more about making sure my family could actually access my assets if something happened to me.
Most of my traditional investments already sit with Fidelity. I decided to move a significant portion of my Bitcoin there as well. It's not because I stopped believing in self-custody—it's because estate planning and simplicity became more important at this stage of my life.
I still keep some Bitcoin in self-custody. I probably always will. But I also recognize that custody isn't just about protecting assets from hackers—it's also about making sure the people you care about can access them when you're no longer here.
There's no one-size-fits-all solution. The right custody model depends on your technical ability, risk tolerance, and life circumstances.
This isn't advice—just the perspective of someone who's been self-custodying Bitcoin since 2012 and whose priorities have evolved over time.
